The Three (Main) Styles of Kickboxing Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Savate

The Three (Main) Styles of Kickboxing Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Savate Kickboxing vs Boxe Française vs Muay Thai: Which One Do You Choose? ChaptersWhat Precisely is Kickboxing, Then?American Kickboxing: A Bit of History.French Kickboxing, Savate, or Boxe Française. And Muay Thai Kickboxing â€" What Is That?Kickboxing for Fitness. The sport that we call ‘kickboxing’ actually has a long and complex history, to the extend that it is difficult to call it a specific sport at all. Most of the countries that play it have a different set of rules â€" whilst the names that they give to the sport differ wildly too.So, if you were struggling with which style of kickboxing to go for â€" either for your physical fitness or for your interest in martial arts training â€" then we understand. It isn’t necessarily straightforward for those not in the know. But here we’ll look at the three main types of kickboxing that you are likely to find in the UK. And whilst we’ve added a fourth â€" in which you might be a little more interested â€" these three are the major styles of kickboxing across the world today. So, let’s learn somethi ng: it’s important to be prepared before you step into the ring! Not really very precise at all. This is the thing. Because whilst going to the boxing gym for fitness kickboxing might sound appealing, sparring in Muay Thai boxing may well sound a little less fun. We’ll come to that precise style â€" which uses elbows and knees too â€" later on.A Generic Term. But kickboxing begins as a generic term â€" one that includes everything from taekwondo to full contact karate, Brazilian jiu-jitsu to mixed martial arts, kung fu to British kickboxing. Each of these individual fighting styles has its own set of rules â€" and very rarely do fighters from different styles fight against each other. This hasn’t always been true, however. During the sport’s relatively brief formal history, the different styles have come about through their contact â€" literally â€" with other martial arts.Only since the sixties have different styles we now know as kickboxing â€" such as the American and the Dutch, for example â€" developed. And, now, the style that most of us know as ‘kickboxing’ per se, is the American variant. With the establishment of institutions such as the International Kickboxing Federation, a global set of formal rules were developed that promoted competition and brought the sport into the public eye in the west. Now, of course, you’ll find kickboxing classes all over the place. And whilst a lot of people learn the sport to take part in proper competitive bouts, most use it for the great workout it offers â€" for strength conditioning and for improving stamina, self-confidence, and a general fitness level.(You can read more, by the way, on the health benefits of kickboxing in another article.) Kickboxing can be a pretty brutal sport.American Kickboxing: A Bit of History.Kickboxing itself started, we can say, in Japan in the 1950s. Whilst karate was widely practiced and publicly enjoyed, it wasn’t much of a thing at the time to make actual contact with your opponent. This changed when Tatsuo Yamada decided to bring Muay Thai into the ring. With the combination of the full contact elements of Muay Thai and the grace and dynamism of karate, a new style was born. This was kickboxing â€" and the problems of definition, formal rules, and style were born right there with it. With each fighter taking different bits and bobs from the two different styles, it was never exceptionally clear â€" in the first days at least â€" which moves were allowed and which weren’t.Kickboxing’s first ruling body was set up in Japan in 1966 and, after this, the sport went global. By which we mean, it went to those countries primarily who did not already have an established tradition of martial ar ts â€" such as the US, where this mix of karate and Muay Thai became hugely popular. The Rules of American Kickboxing.Let’s take American kickboxing as the fighting style to look at in a bit of depth, as this is what we generally are referring to when we talk about kickboxing in the UK. Here's a full-blown explanation of the kickboxing rules too.In American kickboxing, the emphasis is on reflexes and agility, and, as such, the ring is kept quite small to ensure close contact between the fighters.Where American kickboxing differs from other forms of kickboxing is that you are limited to the use of fists and feet and you are prohibited from using the low kick. People have said that this rule â€" no kicks below the waist â€" is a deliberate attempt by promoters to ensure that fighters perform dramatic high kicks. The torso and head are the only legitimate targets for strikes â€" and no throwing is allowed.American kickboxing developed out of the Japanese style of full-contact karate a nd western art of boxing â€" during the sixties and the seventies. Here are the biggest names in kickboxing. Unlike many of the other kickboxing styles in the west, it is not based on an Asian martial arts technique. Rather, it is a specifically French phenomenon dating back to the nineteenth century. That mea ns that you won’t find savate everywhere in the UK. Unlike its American counterpart â€" and the hugely popular Muay Thai â€" French kickboxing is a little more niche.Whilst that doesn’t mean you won’t find it, it’s a fact that is important to remember.A Distinct Sport.Savate comes out of two traditions: the style of hand-to-hand street fighting that was popular across France in the nineteenth century, and traditional English boxing.Whilst it came to be a respectable sport in the 1920s, when it featured in the Olympic Games, like all folk sports the rules differed from region to region in France. Whilst some traditions favoured open-hand slaps, others developed rules and fighting techniques that permitted the knee strike and strikes to the groin. Punching was not necessarily allowed because, under French law, this was seen as a weapon. In France, originally, the kick â€" including low kicks â€" was the most important weapon. And it wasn’t until French fighters had organised bouts with English boxers that savate as we know it now was born. What to Expect in the Ring.Whereas American kickboxing is close contact, savate demands a bit of distance between the fighters. It’s actually thought of as ‘fencing without the swords’, as it has developed into a style with elegance, thought, and athletic moves: the style favours excellent footwork, jumps, and movements. In the ring, savate fighters wear special shoes that allow kicks with the toes. The roundhouse kick, the reverse, and the shin kick are all popular moves for the feet, which it involves familiar moves with the fists too: the uppercut, the jab, and the cross. When fought well, it is actually a beautiful spectacle. And if you are looking for a total body workout, savate is the place to come.Check out our beginner's guide to kickboxing! And Muay Thai Kickboxing â€" What Is That?Of all the different styles of kickboxing found in south-east Asia â€" Pradal Serey in Cambodia and the ‘Burmese’ or Lethw ei style from Myanmar â€" Muay Thai has become the most popular in the western world.Ascribe to it historical reasons, perhaps â€" as Muay Thai, as you’ve seen, was one of the great inspirations behind what we call kickboxing generically these days. It’s a combat sport that uses shins, knees and elbows, and fists â€" as well as the clinch or hold.Muay Thai is almost as popular in the UK as American kickboxing. Yet, given the intense contact that it requires, injury is pretty common. Different types of kickboxing have different rulesElbows and Knees. The main difference between kickboxing and its Thai variety â€" ‘Muay Thai’, by the way, literally just means ‘Thai boxing’ â€" is in its use of lots of different parts of the body. You are not just limited to feet and fists as you are in French, American and western kickboxing more generally. In the same way, Muay Thai is not a sport that has been refined into something gentler and more palatable for a general audience. It remains intense, full contact and the risk of injury is high: you really need to be in exceptional physical fitness to perform it well.Check out the gear you'll need for kickboxing!Kickboxing for Fitness.Whilst these are the three main styles, a lot of people these days prefer to do kickboxing just for fitness. By that we mean, rather than actually sparring, practising the moves in the gym.Whichever you prefer â€" the real fight or the fitness regime â€" both are amazing fun. So, give it a g o!Find out the health benefits of kickboxing! You don't need to fight at all if you do kickboxing.

There are plenty of campsites all over the country. In Arabic, the term is “mukhayyam”. Why not go camping in the Atlas Mountains? (Source: sosinda)Keep in mind that wild camping is illegal in Morocco. However, you can ask the landowner if you can camp on private land. They may ask for a fee for you to use the facilities. There are tonnes of official campsites with electricity and running water. Many, particularly those in the north, even include a bakery, restaurant, pool, etc. Others are more basic with some rocky ground, a bit of shade, access to showers, and latrines.Generally, a campsite costs between 10 to 20Dh per person per night with a fee of 10 to 20Dh to pitch a tent. If you want to use the electricity, you’ll be looking to pay between 10 and 15Dh (around £1.50) and you’ll pay between 5 and 10Dh for warm water (around £1) but given how it is, you probably won’t want warm water. In the south of Morocco, the campsites are usually taken up by campervans.Even in the cities, you can camp, even though these campsites are far from the centre and quite rudimen tary.  That said, there are guest houses, youth hostels, and hotels where you can sleep on a mattress on the roof for between 30 and 50Dh a night, not including breakfast. This is a good option if you want to stay in the city but without breaking the bank. You can also enjoy the souks, pick up a pair of babouches, and bring back some argan oil as a souvenir.Make sure you check the weather in Morocco before you go camping there.Find out the best time to visit Morocco.Youth Hostels in MoroccoYouth hostels aren’t very common in Morocco. The 5 Best Websites for Guitar News and Gear Reviews

The 5 Best Websites for Guitar News and Gear Reviews Maile Proctor Part of learning to play guitar is staying up to date on current events, gear, and industry news. To help you stay in the loop, guitar instructor Matt K. has put together a list of his go-to websites for guitar news Once you’ve taken a few guitar lessons, you may feel the urge to learn more about the instrument, and the gear that goes with it. The guitar can become an addiction, and once you’ve mastered the chords, scales, and licks, you’re going to want to learn about all the gear and equipment. A guitar isn’t just a six-stringed instrument anymore. The addition of an amplifier, pedals, and other fun gear can help produce a number of different sounds. There are several guitar news websites for up-to-date info on guitars and gear, along with  in-depth music news, and sometimes even tablature to learn new songs. Maybe you want to learn more about the guitar players that play your favorite songs, or learn when they have a new album coming out. From electric guitar news, acoustic guitar news, and gear reviews, here are my favorite sites to stay  in the loop with all things guitar. Music Radar Ill start with my favorite website for any type of gear news, from guitars to DJ equipment, Music Radar. Any time Im looking at a new piece of gear or a new instrument, I go to Music Radar and read one of their reviews. Music Radar also complies lists which make it easier to decide what to  buy. For example, before buying a new travel acoustic guitar I checked out their list 32 of the best budget acoustic guitars in the world today. Guitar World Guitar World is less techy, and instead  features lots of artist news and guitar videos. You can still learn about the latest gear and even get a quick video tutorial on how to tune the guitar in different keys, but I go to this website to see Dude Plays Metallicas Master of Puppets on Banjo. GuitarPlayer I remember being in the grocery store with my mom and picking up the latest issue of Guitar Player Magazine  when magazines were still a big thing. Now, the magazine is online and very easy to navigate. GuitarPlayer always has very informative, interesting articles. For example U.S. Made PRS vs. Korean Made PRS: What is the difference (PRS stands for Paul Reed Smith and is an excellent guitar). GuitarPlayer also has excellent product spotlights that I recommend checking out. Ultimate Guitar Where Music Radar is all about the gear, Guitar World and Guitar Player are about the news. Ultimate Guitar, however, is all about the TABS. When I want to learn a new song,  this is my go-to website. They have a great ranking system, so you know which guitar tabs are accurate and which ones were created by an internet troll. Premier Guitar Last, but definitely not least, Premier Guitar keeps you up to date on guitar news, gear, and artists. There are also some great how-to videos, and  my favorite feature, the Rig Rundown. This section features a new artist or band every week and shows the guitars and gear they use on a nightly basis. If you want to see how your favorite bands get their sound, check out Premier Guitar. Check out these sites and let me know which ones you like. If you have any other go-to sites for gear and guitar news, let us know in the comments below!   Post Author:  Matt K. Matthew K. teaches guitar, piano, and music theory lessons in Brooklyn, NY. Five Kingdom Classifications Online Biology Tutors Tutorpace

Five Kingdom Classifications Online Biology Tutors Tutorpace In 1969,R.H.Whittaker proposed the five kingdom classification. He classified the living organisms into five kingdoms. The criteria used for classification are a. Cell structure b. Thallus organization c. Mode of nutrition d. Reproduction e. Phylogenetic relationships. The five kingdoms are Kingdom Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae and Animalia. Kingdom Monera:-The members are prokaryotic and microscopic organisms. True nucleus and membrane bound organelles are absent in these organisms. Kingdom Protista:-It includes primarily unicellular aquatic eukaryotic organisms. The cells of the protists have true nucleus and other membrane bound organelles and non-membranous organelles. Protistans Kingdom Fungi:-It includes eukaryotic, multicellular, heterotrophic organisms. Yeast is an exceptional fungus which is unicellular. Kingdom Plantae: It includes all plants. They are autotrophs,Some plants are partially heterotrophic such as insectivorous plants and parasites. It includes multicellular algae, Bryophytes, Pteridophytes, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms. They are primarily producers on lands and are immobile .They have cellulosic cell wall. The life cycle of plants exhibit alternation of generation. There are two distinct phases In the life cycle of plants-the diploid sporophytic phase and the haploid gametophyticphase. Both of these phases alternate with each other and this phenomenon is called alternation of generation Kingdom Animalia: It includes multicellular heterotrophic eukaryotes. The cells are without cell wall. They directly or indirectly depends on plants for their food. They digest the food in an internal cavity and store it as glycogen or fat. They have a definite growth pattern. They grow into adults with a definite size and shape. They are holozoic and mobile. They exhibit heterotrophic mode of nutrition.

How to Volunteer with the Tutorfair Foundation

How to Volunteer with the Tutorfair Foundation Volunteering is the answer for so many people with an interest or experience in education. We’re all aware that there are young people out there who could use our help, and that spending some time working in schools can have a large impact and can be extremely rewarding. But where to start? What kind of opportunities are out there and how can you get involved? Whether you’re an experienced tutor looking to share your skills or a student considering a career in teaching, The Tutorfair Foundation might have something that’s just right for you. Who are we? The Tutorfair Foundation is the charitable wing of Tutorfair â€" an online marketplace for private tutoring. Funded by donations from paying clients of Tutorfair, we work with volunteers to provide support to students from a broad range of backgrounds that might not otherwise have access to the help. We hope that by improving access to quality tutoring, we can make a positive contribution to the fight against educational inequality â€" one student at a time. What are we up to? This year, we’ll be running in-school tutoring in London, home visits in Birmingham and online opportunities everywhere else. “In-school” programmes involve our volunteers tutoring students in schools where the student population is more than 50% pupil premium eligible. This might involve working in a classroom (supporting a qualified teacher) or engaging students one-to-one or in small groups outside of lessons. Where we think there will be good engagement, we’ll work with schools to set up an after school club for those students who are staying behind to get on top of their homework. “Online” volunteering takes place using our Tutorfair On-Demand service. This is a text-and-image based platform available for free to eligible schools, whose students can log in during homework hours to post questions and topics they’re struggling with. If you’re volunteering at that time, you’ll see the questions being posted and be able to connect instantly with the student to help them through their problem. We have in-school programmes underway already this year in London, with opportunities available for volunteers to tutor everything from GCSE Maths to BTEC Health Social Care. We’re also looking for volunteers to get involved in Birmingham, where we’re offering help to a number of students who have been suffering from bullying. Tutorfair On-Demand will launch at the end of October, so if you’re looking to start volunteering, there’s plenty of ways to get involved! What can you expect when you volunteer? Every volunteer’s experience will be different, but there are a few things you can expect when you decide to get involved. Minimum commitment of 10 hours: usually 1 hour a week for 10 weeks.  Tutors are welcome to complete their 10 hours and decide whether to continue later on! Training and free DBS check: this is dependent on the tutor's level of experience Support from our programme managers: depending on how long tutors are with us, we’ll also do observations; providing feedback and development opportunities throughout your placement. Want to get involved? Here's how to sign up! If you’re already a tutor with Tutorfair, all of our volunteering opportunities will appear on your profile in the “opportunities” section. If you’re not already a tutor with Tutorfair, you can register your interest here  and someone from the team will get in touch to discuss the opportunities with you. We currently have opportunities in London and Birmingham. For in-school opportunities, if you have lots of experience, we’ll be able to get you a DBS check and start you straight away. If you have less experience, we’ll invite you to one of our training sessions. Some of our placements are only available to volunteers with some tutoring experience, but we have lots of opportunities available for people with no experience looking for a way into education. If you’re applying to tutor online, we’ll train you online. This will allow you to volunteer much more flexibly â€" agreeing availability in advance for any time between 6 and 9pm on weekdays and 5 and 8pm on weekends. You can support students who need help from wherever you are â€" home, work or university. For any enquiries please email: foundation@tutorfair.com

Get a head start with learning a language in a new country

Get a head start with learning a language in a new country As you begin your international teaching placements, you may be headed off to a new country with no knowledge of how to speak the native language. In some cases, you’ll be exposed to a completely different alphabet. Don’t fretâ€"use these simple tips that won’t take much time or trouble to get started learning a new language. The more you can learn, the more comfortable you’ll feel in your new city.Study lessWe know this seems counterintuitive, but there have been studies that show that simply reading textbooks and filling out workbooks when learning a language aren’t as effective as getting out into the world and activating that language. Full immersion is your friend! Don’t be shy to make mistakes, people will just appreciate the fact that you’re trying to learn their language. Take as many opportunities as you can to use your target language to communicate with the people around youâ€"even picking up a local newspaper and committing to read one article a day is more effective than studying a textbook and will help you advance more quickly.Stock up on sticky notesOne problem many people report when learning a new language is that they constantly forget common, everyday words that they imagined would be the easiest for them to remember. Using sticky notes to label everything around your apartment in your target language will give you constant little reminders to help you learn these words and work them into your vocabulary.Switch up your music playlistListening to music in a target language can be surprisingly helpful, even though you might feel like you’re doing no studying at all. Music stimulates memory recallâ€"just think about what it’s like when you hear a song you haven’t heard in years: you remember all the words. If you want to take it one step further, a lot of research even suggests that singing songs aloud in the target language may help you learn a language twice as quickly. Not to mention, your pronunciation will improve!Make new friendsThis might seem like it goes without saying, but if you’d like to make language learning one of your focuses, you should really look to make some friends outside of your teaching circle. Try local meetups, a conversation exchange, or a sports team. This way you’ll be exposed more regularly to your new country’s culture in an authentic way and you’ll learn some new language as well. You might even pick up on slang and colloquial language a bit more easily if you have a friend to show you the ropes.Reset your electronics and social networksIf you’re a frequent Facebook user, you’ve likely memorized the functionality in your mother tongue. Why not switch the default language to the native language of your new country to learn some computing vocabulary and common words? You can do this in your Account Settings. You don’t have to stop there thoughâ€"try your cellphone and laptop as well. These will begin to get you thinking about daily tasks in another language.   If you’ve found resources or tips of your own that have helped your advance your language learning, share them with us!
